Excerpt: The Weight of the Idea

"Raskolnikov stopped in front of the door. His heart pounded so hard it felt like it would break his ribs. In his pocket, the weight of the axe felt like an iron yoke. 'Is this what an extraordinary man does?' he wondered, a doubt creeping across his face. He recalled his own theory: there are superior men who have the moral right to break the law if it is for a greater purpose. The old pawnbroker, Alyona Ivanovna, was nothing more than a 'louse' sucking the blood of the poor. Killing her was not a crime, it was a service to humanity. Yet, as he rang the doorbell, a chill ran down his spine. It wasn't fear of the police that paralyzed him, but the chasm that was beginning to open up between his intellect and his soul." 

Summary of the Story

Crime and Punishment tells the story of the downfall and redemption of Rodion Raskolnikov, a brilliant young former law student living in poverty in St. Petersburg.

1. The Crime: Obsessed with the idea that "extraordinary" men (like Napoleon) are above common morality, Rodion decides to murder an elderly pawnbroker to steal from her and use the money for noble causes. However, the plan goes awry, and he ends up killing the woman's sister, Lizaveta, who appears unexpectedly.

2. The Torment: After the murder, Rodion doesn't use the loot. Instead of feeling like a "superman," he falls into a state of delirium, paranoia, and fever. The true plot is not the police pursuit, but the psychological punishment: his own conscience isolates him from the world and from his loved ones (his mother and his sister Dunya). 3. Redemption: His path crosses with that of Sonia Marmeladova, a young woman forced into prostitution to support her family. Sonia's faith and sacrifice deeply move Raskolnikov. Finally, pressured by the astute investigating magistrate Porfiry Petrovich and encouraged by Sonia, Rodion confesses his crime.

4. Punishment: He is sent to a Siberian labor camp. There, accompanied by Sonia's unconditional love, he begins a slow process of repentance and spiritual rebirth.
